KITCHENS

The contemporary kitchen is often a multi-purpose communal space, a room where some families prefer to spend much of their time together. A beautifully designed kitchen pleases the most ambitious cook, while also providing a place for a variety of domestic activities and even informal gatherings with friends. The kitchen setting is an expression of ourselves and our way of life, and often defines the functional aesthetic of the home.

The increasing popularity of the open concept floor plan often gives the kitchen a primary role in the house. Removing walls creates a more spacious environment, and simple lighting improvements can make the kitchen more cheerful and practical. Do the cabinets feel worn and dated? Were the fixtures in style during a decade long past? Are you hoping that the appliances will become retro chic? Or, is your beloved, well-used kitchen simply in need of a new sink and counters? Remodeling, both small and large-scale, can profoundly influence the use and enjoyment of your kitchen space.

We listen closely and collaborate with you carefully, making changes that will transform your kitchen into a favored space in your home. Thinking small scale for now? Let us paint the cabinets, change the handles, and introduce new lighting to brighten and freshen the room. Dreaming of a cook’s kitchen? We can design a space that will foster your culinary genius. Whether you need a strategic update or a complete redesign, we will work with you to create the space you envision – and always, of course, within a sensible budget.

BATHROOMS

Update
Age got you down? Don’t like what you see reflected in that dated mirror? Perhaps it’s time for a face-lift, since bathrooms always show their age. Brass fixtures and oak cabinets? Look, it’s the 70’s! Glass block and cultured marble shower walls? Say “Hi 1980’s.” If the term “Water Closet” aptly describes your bathroom, it’s time to erase signs of the time. Quick fix: Change lighting and paint color to transform what you see in that new mirror. Make-Over: Update fixtures, floor, and cabinetry to improve your use and appreciation of the room. Or transform your bathroom into a personal spa, complete with whirlpool bath, multiple-jet shower, custom shower glass, programmable bidet, heated floor and towel racks, dual basins, sauna, skylights, and voice-controlled temperature and lighting and sound systems. Since the most private space in the home now features some of the most innovative smart technology, you can connect with the world while soaking in your jacuzzi. Or not.

Aging in Place
Whether the bathroom is part of a luxurious Master Suite or a modest half-bath off the kitchen, our basic expectation is that a room is a clean, comfortable, attractive place. A breath-taking skid on a damp floor or an adrenaline-bursting lurch into the shower may prompt sudden awareness that your bathroom must also be safe as you age in place. If stepping into the shower has become risky business, or the formerly fashionable dim lighting is daunting, change is necessary. Installing walk-in showers, automatic lighting, ADA toilets, height variable sink basins, stabilizing bars, and non-slip floor surfaces are safety features well-worth the investment. Considering function and form together can result in a beautiful, coherent design that provides enjoyable use for many years.

Materials and Function
Some of our clients prefer exploring on their own the many possibilities for updating their bathrooms, while others welcome our remodeling recommendations. We listen carefully to your objectives and ideas. Then we share with you our years of installation expertise and our experience with new materials and technology. Most importantly, whether your taste is traditional, modern, edgy, or daring, we can advise on water use, ventilation, care and cleaning, and the use of sustainable materials. Those concerns are never outdated. Whether the new room remains totally private is up to you.

HOME OFFICE

Many people working full or part-time out of their homes have discovered that the cubby we used to call a “den” may no longer meet their needs. Do the kids, the dogs, and the neighbor’s power-washer have you longing for soundproofing? Are those piles of files on the floor better situated in built-in cabinetry? Thinking about repainting the walls so your Zoom meetings don’t need a green screen? Or maybe you would simply have a better day – and a better back -- working at a standing desk under new, eyesight-saving LED lighting while facing out a new window. Whether you need a bay in the garage re-purposed into an office, or a small guest room transformed into a well-designed, productive setting, we can help make your workspace ready for action. The kids, however, will need your special expertise (although we can install solid core doors with combination locks).

Organize a small room by simply installing well-designed shelving (we nail those studs every time). Expand your usable space with built-in work surface areas illuminated by specially targeted lighting. Take out a closet – or transform it into a clever storage area. If you expect to spend many hours working at home, consider designing and building your perfect office environment. No matter how big – or small – the project, we like to think that our work will help make your work more enjoyable and effective.

ADDITIONS

Do your interests exceed your space? Maybe you’re ready to add the art studio, sewing room, game room, or woodshop you’ve always wanted. Perhaps a library/reading room or a lovely indoor-outdoor breakfast nook/garden space is your dream. Or you dream of the kids congregating in a new rec room at the other end of the house while the adults gather in a spacious new dining room that comfortably seats 14.

We will listen carefully to your reasons for wanting more space so that we can share our experience and collaborate to create the perfect setting for your now home-based activities. As you consider your budget, keep in mind that additions to your house, such as a master suite, a home office, or a garage, add value while making your home more beautiful, comfortable, and functional. We can help you make good decisions about what will enhance the worth of your house. (“Yes” on that new laundry room/custom pantry.)

CUSTOM LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL

Like a good parfait, lighting has layers. We love parfaits – and we love lighting design. So, we specialize in custom lighting installations and have many years of expertise. Understanding how light works in terms of both ambiance and function is crucial to success. Knowing how to achieve lighting design objectives through the selection and proper installation of fixtures is equally vital.

When we think about illuminating a room, we consider three types of lighting: general purpose, task spots, and accents. Harmonizing the relationships between those three lighting types is where advanced design begins. General lighting can be provided by recessed cans, which provide an even layer of light. Work or reading areas need attractive task lighting to illuminate surfaces. Artfully selected accent lighting, such as lamps, pendants, and chandeliers, creates a room’s unique ambiance. Rail lighting, artwork spotlights, and undercabinet lighting highlight a room’s prized features or add a measure of safety. We can talk with you about installing new smart technology and energy-saving LED lighting, and we can install voice-activated night-lights so you’re never in the dark. Got an old, beloved lava lamp collecting dust? If that’s your idea of the parfait’s cherry on top, we’ll make certain there’s a safe outlet where you can plug it in.
