Legos. It all started with Legos.
Johnnie’s parents were both immigrants. His father moved from Canada, and his mother moved from Denmark. They met in downtown Detroit in the late 1950s, and his father proposed to his mother on their third date – love at first sight.

His father, a draftsman, worked for General Motors designing cars. That’s how Johnnie first learned about precision and detail. His father didn’t set out to teach him specifically about those concepts; it was just who he was, and it emanated from him. Johnnie couldn’t help but learn those qualities from him. His father loved to tinker in his workshop, and Johnnie loved to join his dad there as he grew up. His dad taught him how to build things, most often model airplanes. Johnnie learned how to glue the pieces of balsa wood together, sand them until they fit just right, and assemble them into flying machines – which he promptly crashed. He never claimed to be a good pilot.
His mother was proud of her heritage and loved being a Dane. It’s no surprise, then, that Johnnie received a lot of Legos for his birthdays and Christmas. Legos are a Danish invention. He had enough Legos to build an entire village, including houses, stores, cars, and even a Lego train that ran across the floor. Throughout his youth, he built Lego kits repeatedly. As a 6-year-old boy, he even visited the motherland, the original Legoland in Denmark.
He didn’t realize until years later that building all those Lego kits taught him how things are constructed. His Lego building fueled his curiosity to determine how larger structures were built. He enjoyed working with his hands and taking things apart to see how to put them back together. When he decided to go to college, he chose mechanical engineering.
He spent ten years in engineering, and while it satisfied his desire to put things together, he wanted to build with his hands again. So, turning his back on a safe and secure profession, he opted to bet on himself. He opened his first remodeling business in Tucson, Arizona, in 2002.
All his skills and training have led him to this place. From his father, Johnnie learned patience and attention to detail. In college, he learned how math, structural loads, and forces affect a proper design. In engineering, he learned to create and read technical drawings, work efficiently, and meet deadlines. And Legos? Legos taught him the joy of constructing.
